Rapid assessment on efficacy of community-level sensitization initiatives
India is the country with the highest burden of TB and it ranks eighth among the world’s 22 high-burden TB countries, with approximately 1.8 million new cases yearly. Every minute, 1 person dies of TB in India. One-third of the people estimated to have TB are still either not diagnosed or not reported. Even when people suspected with TB are identified, the disease is often diagnosed and treated late. This means that it causes more damage and can be more difficult to treat.
CINI is a 43-year-old national award-winning organisation working on public health issues focusing on women, children and adolescents for the last four decades in West Bengal & Jharkhand. CINI has been working in urban slums of Kolkata for more than two decades reaching the unreached pockets for facilitating service uptake. Presently CINI is working under aTB project to reverse the grim trend of TB by working with multiple stakeholders in urban areas of Kolkata, Howrah and South 24 Paraganas through a multi-pronged strategy for creating a local level network with the local key stakeholders through an NGO-led model.
The community sensitization strategy is using different communication channels like one-to-one/ group meetings to create awareness of key stakeholders about TB as well engage them as much as possible into the project meaningfully. The one to group meetings are structured to be done on a regular basis with different groups of stakeholders as mentioned above in the model and volunteers engaged are the key players in communicating TB messages, engaging the stakeholders into the project.
It is also using different mid-media channels like street theatre, talking doll show, folk songs, magic shows, etc. The mid-media events have been planned as a campaign mode so far to highlight the importance of certain significant days and emphasise the inter-relatedness of TB with such issue.
Moreover, setting up of information kiosks and exhibiting mobile van tableau are other forms of sensitization measures to reach a large populace and ensuring visibility of the project to increase community awareness about TB care and management.
With this objective in mind and looking into the deliverables, CINI is planning to conduct a rapid assessment:
To understand the efficacy and efficiency of presently used communication channels for community awareness building and engagement
To understand the present knowledge among the community in TB care
To assess the knowledge, understanding and efficiency of project frontline volunteers in delivering the work
The details of scope of work, deliverables along with timeline and payment modalities are given as annexure.
