Aajeevika Bureau seek an enthusiastic young lawyer to join the India Labourline (ILL) South and North regional offices in Bangalore and Gurgaon respectively. The India Labourline is a phone-based service to provide information, counselling, distress support and legal aid to informal workers throughout India. It seeks to become a powerful tool available to all categories of waged and self-employed workers in the large sectors of construction, factories, urban services, farm work, street vending, etc. India Labourline is operationalised by Aajeevika Bureau, and it is supported by a response network of civil society organisations working on labour issues across the country. We are seeking two Programme Officers (Legal) to supervise and support ILL programme staff and partners engaging in providing legal aid and mediation services. Currently the ILL programme is operational in 14 locations across the country. The role of the Programme Officer is intended to be as follows:

a. Supporting coordination of the activities of the helpline.

b. Providing supervision, training and guidance to a team of Case Managers and monitor their activities and performance.

c. Providing training, hand holding in the field and follow up support to the ILL field teams based in different locations in their outreach, legal aid and mediation activities.

d. Coordination between various field teams and the ILL central team comprising of Case Managers.

e. Conduct online and in-person capacity building programmes of varying lengths and develop handbooks / reading materials for the field teams & Case Managers.

f. Managing the legal education, legal aid and legal response to address labour disputes components of the programme.

g. Overseeing and processing insights and data from ILL MIS systems for strategic and operational analysis.

h. Conceptualising and undertaking small studies, research and advocacy efforts to highlight labour violations.

i. Managing the operations of the multi-lingual helpline and shift rosters of Case Managers.

j. Reporting to the Regional Coordinator and supporting her in quality implementation and future expansion of the programme.

Who are we looking for? We are looking for a young professional with:

A law degree and full-time work experience of at least 3 to 5 years in a non-profit / legal organisation.

Preference will be given to candidates with work experience in labour and / or legal aid programmes.

Lawyers registered with the bar and having litigation experience, especially in labour / human rights law fields, would be preferred.

The role will require regular travel to the field locations hence readiness to travel is a must.

The position calls for an ability to interact with teams, people-orientation, and social media competence.

Familiarity with MIS and data tools in order to process and respond to information coming into ILL.

Writing & Speaking knowledge in English and one or more south Indian languages (for South Regional Office position) / in Hindi (North) is essential.

We can offer a monthly compensation in the range of Rs 45000–Rs 50000 per month for this position. This is an excellent opportunity to travel, learn and engage with ground issues related to informal labour and migration.
