Society for DISHA is looking to hire an Assistant Coordinator for a community based para-legal project at rural level, which requires the candidate to have legal acumen and basic legal procedural understanding, ability to assess and understand community needs and articulate their problems effectively before relevant administrative authorities, ensuring transparency, accountability and access to justice.
She/he will be responsible for:
• Conducting legal research and preparing legal drafts for community members/organisations
• Providing community with legal services such as drafting and pleading before concerned authorities
• Planning and conducting field visits to carry out legal awareness camps for community based organisations
• Liasioning with concerned authorities, field level activists and community resource persons
• Preparing topically relevant training materials and providing training to activists
• Collecting information, documentation and monitoring ongoing programmes and activities
• Writing and sharing of reports timely and responding to queries
• Maintaining database of programme and activities
• Supporting project implementation work and the work assigned by the organisation from time to time
Working Place: Kolkata Head Office mainly, along with required travels in the districts of West Bengal.
Qualifications required: A Bachelor’s degree in Law is a must. Prior litigation experience / working in advocate’s chamber is preferable. Prior experience in working as a lawyer on rights-based issues will be given weightage in selection of candidates.
Knowledge & Skills required:
• Understanding of law and legal process
• Efficiency in filing documentation and petitions
• Efficiency in drafting and pleading
• Efficiency in written and spoken English and Bengali is a must
• Knowledgeable in legal research and methodology
• Reasonably good knowledge in computer - word, excel, PPT presentation
Salary: INR 22000

Some social activists, environmentalists, public health experts and human rights campaigners came together in early 1995 to form a voluntary organisation - Society for Direct Initiative for Social and Health Action (DISHA), registered on 12.09.1995 under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act 1961. Since inception DISHA has been active on different issues concerning environment, environmental health and human rights. We have focussed on municipal waste management, bio-medical waste management, materials policy, industrial pollution, toxicity, coastal environment, biodiversity, conservation and energy issues. In all these areas DISHA has undertaken documentation, research, policy intervention, campaign and awareness generation, training and publication.
