About the Organization: Himmotthan Society is one of the leading NGOs in the Himalayan region, that has been known for its work in the Himalayan rural landscape for the last 2 decades. The organization has worked intensively on livelihoods, agriculture, and WaSH. While working intensively in the far-off remote areas, it was observed that the best education services were not reaching the communities, hence the organization decided to start with its interventions in these regions. Over the last few years, the organization has piloted and expanded its education portfolio.
Himmotthan Society has an MoU with the Government of Uttarakhand to work in 665 schools of 4 blocks of 3 Districts in Uttarakhand to strengthen primary school education. Multiple interventions are proposed in the program tenured from (Oct 2022 – Sep 2025).

About the Programme: The current ongoing education program focuses on Improving the quality of education with a special focus on strengthening the foundational learning of children from Government Primary Schools in Uttarakhand. These 665 schools are spread across in Uttarakhand. The average school strength in the region is around 20 children with a basic setup of one/two classrooms and 1 teacher at the majority of the locations. Some of the overall key elements of the program are: (i) 665 schools are covered from 4 Blocks and 3 Districts (Rudraprayag, Tehri and Nainital) in Uttarakhand; (ii) Professional Development of Teachers and Field Staff on the key elements of the program – FLN, Children’s Libraries, and Physical Literacy; (iii) Advocacy with the District and State Level; (iv) Community Engagement and Strengthening of SMCs; and (v) Monitoring and Assessment
Apart from this, the organization has also piloted small projects in secondary education around e-classrooms and sports grounds aiming at creating good learning facilities in the schools.
About the Role: The State Lead will be responsible for the overall management of the programs, reporting, financial management, and designing new education programs
Some of the important responsibilities of the State Lead are:
Coordinating with the Executive Director and other senior members on project implementation and progress reporting
Coordinating and liaising with different Government Education departments
Presenting the portfolio’s work in different Government meetings
Coordinating with the funders for timely reporting and any other requirements
Budget Tracking and Financial Management of the project
Coordinating with program team members for timely project implementation
Checking the consolidated data and reports
Anchor the team meetings and reflection sessions
Networking and collaborating with other organizations in the sector
Document the learnings, observations, and case studies and publish them regularly within the organization and share them with local authorities/funders/internal communications team etc.
Writing new proposals and fundraising for new projects in collaboration with organization leads

The State Lead will be reporting to the Executive Director, Himmotthan Society
Job Location & Travel Requirements:
The duty position will be in Dehradun in Uttarakhand with frequent travel requirements between all project blocks
Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:
Master’s degree in relevant field or equivalent
Minimum of 5-8 years of experience in the field of education
Experience working at the field level with multiple stakeholders
Experience in implementing a project in a rural setting
Good understanding of existing education scenario
Good interpersonal skills
Command in both English and Hindi
Good documentation skills
Open to feedback
Flexible to operate in a frugal setting
Ability to multitask
Open to travel and (preferably) can drive in the mountains

In 2001, Tata Trusts initiated Himmothan Pariyojana (HMP) to target the root causes of under development in the Central Himalayan region of Uttarakhand. Himmotthan, the associate organization which manages the Himmothan Pariyojana, has been working in the central Himalayan regions of Uttarakhand since 2007. The expansion of Himmotthan work beyond Central Himalayan region of Uttarakhand to Western Himalayan region is being seen as a natural growth of the organisation that has evolved through constant learning and incorporation of new ideas aimed towards the betterment of the rural communities. Himmotthan works in the state of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Leh region and is focused on working among the rural mountain communities by developing sustainable community owned enterprises linked to livestock, agriculture, non-timber forest produce, and intervening for better education, access to safe water, sanitation and energy.
