Project name: SETU (Child Rights Resource and Training Center)
About Shaishav:
Shaishav was established in 1992, as an organization committed to realizing the basic rights of children, particularly the underprivileged. We envision the creation of a society where each child achieves the potential she or he is born with, becomes independent, and contributes to the holistic and sustainable development of a world that is just, peaceful, and humane. Shaishav strives to ensure that all children achieve the basic right to free and compulsory education; create a child centered environment and provide opportunities where children and youth can realize their basic rights; and develop learning resources for children and make them available to all those who can influence children’s holistic development.
SETU: Child Rights Training and Resource Centre (CRTRC)
The Child Rights Training and Resource Centre or SETU, meaning "bridge" in Hindi, aims to bridge the gap between resources and people, ensuring that knowledge and materials—whether from Shaishav or elsewhere—reach those who need them. The programme emerged from Shaishav’s extensive grassroots work, through which the organisation developed a wealth of need-based educational materials on academics, life skills, and child rights, all guided by direct feedback from children. Shaishav’s library—one of the largest among grassroots organisations—houses over 10,000+ books, audiovisual materials, and magazines in Hindi, English, and Gujarati. SETU facilitates the creation of a shared pool of knowledge and tools while also conducting research, training, and networking opportunities for the collective benefit of professionals and organizations dedicated to children's welfare.
Key components:
Resource Development: Shaishav has established a comprehensive repository of demand-driven resources and modules, and is continuously developing new materials via its grassroots work, all of which could significantly benefit children and grassroots professionals in other parts of the country.
Training: Shaishav collaborates with like-minded organisations to provide training on specific subjects and how to use their resources effectively. Our Training of Trainers (ToT) programme aims to create a cadre of professionals capable of implementing child-centric participatory models in their regions and also training others.
Action Research: All of our research is linked to actionable steps, conducted through multiple approaches. We utilize commissioned studies, such as our initial child labour survey, which informed our early interventions to help children return to school. Through our ongoing grassroots work, we continuously observe learning patterns in the community and develop need-based resources based on direct feedback from children. Additionally, we facilitate Participatory Action Research (PAR), where children lead research on issues affecting them with our support in creating child-friendly methods for data collection and analysis.
Documentation: We document our learning of the past three decades and of all the processes that lead to that learning. We also document our processes in form of manuals and modules so other like minded organization can also refer and use it in their work with children.
Macro-level Networking: Our grassroots work empowers us to represent children's best interests in ongoing policy dialogues. Shaishav actively engages in various state, national, regional, and international issue-based networks. We co-founded the Child Rights Collective Gujarat in 2003, which facilitated in evolving into the Gujarat Bal Manch in 2015, a federation of children's collectives. Our founder also serves on the Executive Committee of the National Action and Coordination Group to End Violence Against Children (NACG - EVAC), the apex body of SAIVAC in South Asia. Additionally, she is a National Board Member of the Campaign Against Child Labour (CACL) and the RTE Forum, while actively participating in several other national and international networks, including Young Voices, Catalyst 2023, Ashoka and Aspire.
