What We Can Achieve Together:

The Geospatial Scientist will oversee and implement GIS, technology and innovation needs of the program. This role involves coordinating the geospatial and related technological activities between internal and external sources and builds internal and external relationships.

We’re Looking for You:

Essential Functions:

Data Management: Lead the process of building and maintaining a spatial data and tools library for ongoing and future conservation projects.

Integrate Geospatial program: Build and implement a shared vision across the program team to integrate geospatial and related technologies in TNC-India’s programs during all stages of a project – planning, implementation, and monitoring & evaluation – to advance NCIS science-based conservation strategies. This includes but not limited to activities like developing predictive models, integrating spatial data with field surveys, conducting landscape analyses to assess ecological integrity, identifying potential priority sites using modeling tools, spatial conservation action planning, developing and implementing decision support tools.  

Geospatial Technology: Work with NCIS team to define problem statements and the role of geospatial technologies in addressing them, including development of new tools, approaches, methods, processes, and techniques to improve conservation actions.

Partnerships: Build partnerships with relevant geospatial and data science agencies and universities in India. Work to advance other appropriate commercial technology partnerships.

Program Management and Execution: Plan, manage, execute, and coordinate relevant projects and/or project work streams. Over time, identify the need for, and oversee additional related capacity (e.g., short-term or longterm interns, manager, analyst, specialist or technician). Identify, negotiate, and oversee contracts with vendors. Develop and manage program budget and integrate geospatial and technology budgets into program proposals and budgets as necessary.

In supervisory capacity, plans, organizes and directs assigned project programs.  

Supervises project staff of managers, analysts, specialists, and technicians.

Must be willing and able to travel.

Responsibilities and Scope:

Broad conceptualization, execution, management, and leadership responsibility for all geospatial and technology work, including setting programmatic objectives, and identifying and bringing on additional capacity as needed (e.g., interns, consultants, full time permanent or project hires). 

Ensure that global and field-based projects utilize cutting edge geospatial technology and science to help address large-scale, complex problems by leveraging internal and external capacity, and systematic and thorough processes.

Coordinate a multidisciplinary team, including responsibility for team engagement, and staff management (objective setting, coaching, and mentoring).

Conduct spatial planning of land, water, and oceans across India

Designs, directs, and/or executes complex and diversified projects, coordinating the work of other professionals, managing budgets, and ensuring geospatial and technology program accountability. 

Build a geospatial data library with necessary data and tools to guide conservation work across India

Meet the program’s spatial analysis needs across our programmatic areas and major initiatives.  

Undertake analysis for landscape-level, land-use and conservation planning.

Provide technical coordination and support of geospatial activities between members of TNC-India team, TNCGlobal teams, and project partners.

Take leadership and project management roles when necessary

Build and maintain partnerships with key institutions. 

Collect spatial data and prepare maps to assist in effective communication and writing of reports and proposals

Respond to requests for geospatial information from partners and provide interpretation, as needed 

Assist with other programmatic needs which may include coordinating stakeholder meetings, preparing presentations and reports related to geospatial and related technological activities, etc. 

Work independently and exercise independent judgment to identify and solve problems.

Demonstrate sensitivity in handling confidential information.

Ensure compliance with NCIS policies and procedures and external (donor/legal/IRS) requirements.

Manage assigned tasks, coordinating the work of a broader NCIS team, and achieving deadlines.

Identify and integrate technology solutions and opportunities working with the science and program teams. 

Resolves large-scale, complex problems through systematic studies and analyses, including the creation or improvement of techniques and procedures. 

Designs, implements, and directs complex and diverse projects to identify creative solutions, encompassing multiple programs and coordinating the work of other professionals inside and outside the organization. 

Incorporates cross-disciplinary knowledge to support program objectives

What You’ll Bring:

Minimum Qualifications:

MS degree in Geography, GIS, remote sensing, geospatial science, conservation science, Computer Science or related field and 7-10 years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Advanced expertise in the use of Geographic Information Systems (e.g. Esri ArcGIS Pro and extensions, QGIS, MapInfo, etc.) and Remote Sensing Software (e.g. Leica Geosystems ERDAS Imagine, ENVI, Feature Analyst, Google

Earth Engine etc.)

Experience in designing and maintaining enterprise-scale spatial and relational databases to meet organizational needs.

Experience in developing and managing multiple projects.

Working knowledge in creating and maintaining internet-based spatial data viewers, interactive online analysis tools and spatial data distribution tools. 

Supervisory experience, including ability to motivate, lead, set objectives and manage performance.

Experience administering a budget.

Experience training individuals and groups.                

Working knowledge of relevant scripting and programming languages (e.g. Python, R, Microsoft VBA, C++, Java,

JavaScript, etc.).                                                                                     

Experience creating standardized cartographic map design and spatial data visualization products for static and dynamic (Internet-based) map applications.

Desired Qualifications:

Master’s degree and 10-12 years of experience or equivalent combination. 

Project Management certification highly preferred.

Good knowledge of the data sources and availability with NRSC, FSI, WII, other central/regional/state/local departments

Advanced experience in analysis with Google Earth Engine, and other similar tools will be highly beneficial 

Working knowledge of scripting languages (esp. Python, SQL, and R) for conducting automated, complex, and highlevel geospatial analysis.

Experience with server and online GIS applications.

Knowledge of Renewable Energy technologies and prior experience is an asset. 

Experience managing big data, knowledge and use of country and international spatial databases directly relevant for India. 

Experience and knowledge of application of various remote sensing data for monitoring land, ocean and water resources

Experience and knowledge of application of various geospatial analysis and tools in spatial conservation planning

Develop alternate/new strategies, analytical pathways to carry out established geospatial analysis and tasks to achieve various program goals.

Experience with project management and effective coordination across internal and external stakeholders.

Strong ability to understand and analyze business processes and the use of technology by different facets of the organization.

Experience managing all aspects of contracting with consultants and vendors.

Proficiency in working independently as well as jointly with colleagues on a team.

Good communication skills and ability to present complex information to a wide range of stakeholders. 

Experience with technology, including cloud computing, machine learning, and AI. 

Able to act with initiative and to take responsibility.

Ability to think critically and “out of the box” with a problem-solving approach. 

Willingness to work flexible hours to accommodate international staff and time differences.  

Reporting and Supervision:The Geospatial Scientist position will be based at New Delhi. The selected candidate shall report to Lead renewable and work closely with RE team as well as internal and external stakeholders.
