About Azim Premji Foundation
We are a not-for-profit organisation with a vision to contribute towards a just, equitable, humane and sustainable society. Our work is focused on India. Our presence on the ground provides us with the unique opportunity to contribute to immediate and long-term developments through continual work. We build institutions through our own operations, collaborate with governments on projects fundamental to our vision and work with partners in areas of equity and human well-being.
School Education
Good schooling is the first step towards social change. Our purpose is to strengthen the government school education system in India on the ground, with a focus on the more disadvantaged regions of the country.
The journey of Azim Premji Foundation began with programmatic interventions in school education. After the first 10 years of programmatic interventions, we adopted an institutional approach, by setting up field institutes to strengthen the government school education system on the ground.
Our teams in the field work closely and consistently with people who have a direct influence on teaching and learning in the classroom: teachers, head teachers, education functionaries and other stakeholders.
We believe that learners learn better if teachers teach better. By leveraging our expertise in our work with teachers, we seek to create sustainable improvements in the government school system.
About the work
The primary goal of our work in education is to support teachers in government schools teach better?
Our endeavour is to build their capacity in subject content, pedagogy and perspective.
We conduct interactions with teachers at the Teacher Learning Centres (TLCs) we have set up in the major towns of the districts we work in.The TLCs, located in either government schools or private spaces, provide teachers with a place where they can participate in multiple modes of engagement such as workshops, discussions, Voluntary Teacher Forums, melas and sharing sessions.
Our areas of focus include sustained engagement with teachers, head teachers and education functionaries, and work that supports and enables our functions on ground such as school curricula,
textbook development, learning materials, and developing modules for in-service teacher training at the state level. We work with head teachers to bring changes in everyday practices in the school environment: the conduct in morning assemblies, the creation of Reading Corners in libraries and the inclusion of sports, to name a few.
