Erode: An NGO, 'Vizhuthugal', has alleged that revenue department officials had refused to release 14 bonded labourers who were rescued from brick kilns at Andhiyur in Erode district this week.
Director of the NGO M Thangavel alleged that the revenue officials also refused to give food and shelter to the labourers. "The revenue officials were instructed by local ruling party functionaries to refrain from the issue," he alleged.
Under the supervision of Gobichettipalayam sub-collector Krishnan Unni, revenue and police officials had rescued 14 people, including four women, on Wednesday. They were allegedly forced to work as bonded labourers at various brick kilns in the locality for more than 10 years.
The workers were brought to the tahsildar office in Andhiyur, where the brick kilns were located.
