While a city based NGO Guria Swayam Sevi Sansthan will get central government's Nari Shakti Puraskar 2015 (Rani Gaidinliu Zeliang Award) for outstanding work for welfare and wellbeing of women on the occasion of International Women's Day on Tuesday (March 8) at Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi, a social worker Madhuri Singh will receive UP government's Rani Lakshmi Bai Bravery Award at chief minister's residence on 5 Kalidas Marg, Lucknow on the occasion. Besides, Guria Swayam Sevi Sansthan will also be felicitated with Rani Lakshmi Bai Bravery Award on Tuesday.
Guria's founder Ajeet Singh will receive the Nari Shakti Puraskar, which carries a cash prize of Rs. two lakh and citation, from the President Pranab Mukherjee in New Delhi, while his wife (also a Guria activist) Manju and social worker Madhuri will receive Rani Lakshmi Bai Bravery Award (Rs. one lakh) from the chief minister Akhilesh Yadav.
"We are happy that our work is being recognized", said Ajeet, who began his journey with Guria, a non-profit organisation, in 1991. Since then Guria has been fighting against the sexual exploitation of women and girls specially forced prostitution and trafficking. "While responding to their immediate suffering we are focusing on the root causes of prostitution, poverty and inequality. We strongly believe that it is not charity that is wanting in the world -it is justice to make a humane world where all beings co-exist in harmony," he said.
