After celebrating 50 long years of married life, life came to a standstill for Shankar Kelkar (name changed) after the death of his wife. But a month ago, ajoba, as he is fondly called by residents of Vrindavan society, has been spending quality time at a day care centre that has been started by the members of the Thane branch of the Mumbai based NGO Nana Palkar Smruti Samiti.
From playing games like carrom, chess and cards to writing essays, poems, etc, the elderly members of the society have a good time and spend their day in a meaningful manner.
The NGo has started a day care centre for the elderly who are frail and cannot manage on their own. They have converted a two-room tenement into a recreational centre which is equipped with a TV, music system, beds, a small library that is stocked up with books and newspapers.
