JAIPUR: A two-day training programme of the non-official visitors (NOV) to the jails ended at the Rajasthan police Academy on Wednesday. After visit to the jails the NOV informed the gathering on the problems they have witnessed during their visits to the jail. Director general(Jails) Ajit Singh urged the NOV to participate in improving the conditons in jail via talking to the government officials , policy makers and the public representatives.
"I will ensure that you should all be able to go for the surprise visits to the jail. We will also install automatic machines of cooking at the jails," he said.On Tuesday Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) the NGO who have jointly organised the programme with the Rajasthan state human rights commission and Rajasthan prisons department had urged on having trained administrators from top to bottom to improve the situation in jails. tnn Maja Daruwala, director, CHRI, said that jails in the country are overcrowded with the inmates including undertrials and convicts. "What we need is trained officers for the prison department from top to bottom. The officers of director general (jail) and inspector general (jail) rank should be from Prison Services in the country rather than from the police department," Daruwala said.
