Locals from Calangute, along with the non-government organisation (NGO), Childline, will hold an awareness drive against the use of child labour in Calangute on Saturday. Based on information received from the public, they will also conduct raids at any establishment found employing child labour with the assistance of police, said Calangute zilla panchayat member Shawn Martins.

June 11 is International Child Labour Awareness Day.

"We will hold an awareness drive and also go around to check. If we find child labour, we will rescue them," Martins said. Although, child labour is banned, a number of establishments in Calangute allegedly employ children. Martins, along with locals, had recently formed Neighbourhood Watch committees in Calangute to keep a strict vigil on beggars, especially child beggars and launched a crackdown on the beggars with the help of an NGO and police.
