CHENNAI: International Foundation for Crime Prevention and Victim Care (PCVC), a Chennai-based NGO, will study communities that have been affected by floods to ensure that gender- based violence does not increase in families, most of whom are being displaced to the outlying areas.

The Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre in Chennai on Wednesday announced a Rs 13.6 lakh grant for this project that aims at raising awareness on domestic and sexual violence among women and children.

"This project envisages that interventions to tackle emergency needs such as safety, housing, health and nutrition will provide a useful entry point to address the larger strategic goals of recognizing gender-based violence in all its forms and engaging in prevention and effective intervention," said Prasanna Gettu, CEO, PCVC.

There is a strong civil society movement in Taiwan with reportedly more than 20,000 NGOs, said director- general of the cultural centre Charles C Li. "We are looking to encourage NGOs from Taiwan to collaborate with organisations in Chennai. In April, one organisation will come here to mobilise with local stakeholders." RELATED
